Community action for public health

Public health does not end with the actions taken by governments and health professionals. Equally important is the role of communities and individual actions that can have a significant impact on public health.

   Promoting healthy lifestyles

One of the most important ways a community can contribute to public health is by promoting a healthy lifestyle. This includes promoting a healthy diet, regular physical activity, non-smoking and moderate alcohol consumption.

   Health education

Communities can play a key role in health education. Informing community members about health risks and how to avoid them is a key aspect of improving public health. Health education can cover topics ranging from healthy eating and physical activity to the dangers of tobacco and alcohol use.

   Environmental management

Communities can also contribute to public health by managing their environment. This includes efforts to improve air quality, water quality, securing safe spaces for play and recreation, promoting safe traffic, or collecting and segregating waste.

   Supporting healthcare sistems

Communities can support health systems in a variety of ways. These can include efforts to increase access to health care, especially for vulnerable populations; promoting immunizations; supporting mental health programs; or working to improve hygiene and sanitation.

   Summary

Community action plays a key role in improving public health. From promoting healthy lifestyles, to health education, to environmental stewardship, to supporting health systems, community action can have a significant impact on the health of all its members. Community involvement is integral to effective public health promotion.
